Frozen lakes and waterfalls, pretty villages, glowing log fires and falling snow. The mountains in the winter are perfect for a romantic holiday in a catered chalet. An activity holiday in the Alps may not shout romance at first, but it should! Go on, escape to the Three Valleys! A catered chalet in the mountains boasts hot tubs, saunas, log fires and balconies with amazing views. Other accommodation ideas include staying in an igloo, a romantic private chalet, a chalet hotel or impress your partner with your cooking skills in a self-catered apartment.
Are you an active couple?
If you can both find the energy after a day of skiing, then why not try snowshoeing, ice-skating, or even ice climbing? Snowshoes allow you to explore off-piste areas together, and some companies even offer snowshoe tours complete with picturesque picnics. What could be more romantic? Meribel boasts an impressive ice rink which was constructed for the 1992 Winter Games. Smaller ice rinks can be found throughout the Three Valleys and Paradiski areas. As for Ice climbing, it’s sure to bring you and your partner closer as you will be relying on one another whilst ascending the ice falls. However, it’s certainly not for everyone!
Other fun activities for the active couple include husky sledding, Via Ferrata, or paragliding. For an ideal romantic day out in the Three Valleys, consider a hot air balloon ride. The views are unrivalled and a private basket option provides an intimate experience for you and a loved one. Quick hint- for an extra special touch, champagne, chocolates or roses in the basket are sure to go down well.
Relaxation in a catered chalet
Between skiing, après ski and various outdoor activities, there’s no shortage of things to do for you and your partner to enjoy. However, you may just want to ski in the day and sit back and relax in the evenings. To be truthful, the spa treatments in the mountains are also not to be missed. Special couple’s treatments are available in some Spa’s. Many massage therapists in the area provide a mobile service, meaning you don’t even have to leave your accommodation. You can even treat yourself to a catered chalet such as: Anniek, Balkiss, Katerina, Lorraine or our recently upgraded Irene and Jasmine and relax in the private saunas and hot tubs. And with the extra bonus of Valentine’s Day falling in the middle of the season, whisk your partner to relax in the Three Valleys. Choose a catered chalet, you can’t say there aren’t plenty of options to choose from.
The key to a man’s heart…
…is through his stomach is what everyone says right? If that’s true, resort dining will definitely help! In terms of food, there are countless options- and in a catered chalet the work is all done for you. Enjoy the luxuries of an English breakfast, afternoon teas and three course meals with wine in the evenings. If you choose to go for premium service, you’ll also get croissants, canapes, cheese and after dinner liqueur and chocolates! On the chalet staff’s day off, or if you are staying in a self-catered or half board property, then don’t panic. There are many romantic restaurants to be found all over the Three Valleys and Paradiski areas.
For an extra-special romantic dinner, there are twenty-one Michelin Star restaurants in the Three Valleys to impress your taste buds. If those aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other restaurants to choose from, some also boast a romantic ambience. Sharing fondue with panoramic mountain views is always a good idea. Raclette- something I sampled this year- is a must-try if you’re staying in the area. If you go for a catered chalet, alcohol upgrades are available- which your loved one is sure to appreciate! If you are staying elsewhere, be sure to check out the local wine nonetheless. French wine is renowned for being among the best in the world, and with good reason. Wine tasting is available in some resorts, perfect for a little sophisticated Après ski.
